A home and business for a couple providing outback tours in the Escalante National Monument. The facility provides a small private space for the couple and communal dining, bathing, relaxing spaces for guests, as well as support spaces.

Features include

  • Post and beam with straw bale construction.
  • Passive solar maximization with proper placement and control of glazing.
  • Emphasis on healthy, natural plasters and finishes, including adobe floors.
  • Radiant heat with natural cooling through shading and ventilation.
  • Recycled cellulose insulated roof.
  • Use of local materials and labor to minimize transportation and support local economy.
  • Minimal land impacts of grading and access through proper building placement.
  • Off the grid energy sources through photovoltaics and solar hot water.
  • Rainwater capture and reuse.
