McDonald Residence

Design
- Approx 3400 sf living space w/ detached garage and workshop
- Addressing challenges of steep site w/ height limitations,
gentle driveway slope reqiirement, optimizing amazing
views and solar potential
- Inspired by simplicity and clarity of structural expression,
references to vernacular mining buildings, expression
of thoughtful detailing
- Sustainable design measures achieve high level of performance
while blending seamlessly with aesthetic of home. Salvaged,
recycled, materials to enhance expression of placemaking
and responsibility to environment
- Size controlled to accommodate live work without over-sizing
of space
- Allows multiple uses for spaces such as
studio, family room, yoga/guest, media/climbing wall
Site
- Walking distance to downtown Park City
- Building located on disturbed part of site, preserving
southern part of property as natural
- Vertical retaining (Hilfiker system), minimizes footprint
of site impact
- Locally mined stone used for retaining
- Natural vegetation remaining for majority of site
- New vegetation to be native, compatible w/ existing
- Organic garden and greenhouse to support
- Planted roof over garage to reduce hardsurface and preserve
greenspace
- Oriented for passive/active solar
- Use of space beneath building cantilever for patio to
reduce need to expand much beyond building footprint
