The Staffords are involved in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and clean technology advocacy and development, and they wanted their Tuscan/Italian-styled home to reflect those values while incorporating their love of music, cooking, and entertaining.  The house was awarded a Five-Star-Plus Energy Star rating with an HERS Index of 44 (indicating it is 56% more energy efficient than a HERS reference home built to the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code).

Features

  • Passive solar with south-facing orientation, low-e windows and properly-sized overhangs with darkened tile over insulated slab and hardwood floors 
  • Primary living areas arranged to take advantage of daylighting and southern valley views (garage sits on the west to protect living space from summer western sun)
  • Open floor plan for living, kitchen, and dining areas (with openings between floors to facilitate heating and cooling circulation)
  • Radiant heat floors
  • Groundsource water heating and air cooling system with operable windows and ceiling fans to facilitate ventilation
  • 2 X 8 wood frame construction with Icynene wall insulation
  • Energy Star windows, doors, and appliances
  • CFL and LED light coves 
  • Low VOC paints, formaldehyde-free closet fixtures
  • Rain/snow melt catchment cistern for patio plants
  • Dual-flush toilets
  • Countertops made of recycled paper in offices and powder room; tiles made from recycled glass in upstairs bath
  • Trex decking
  • Radon mitigation system
