The Chase Mill Greening/Renovation

Tracy Aviary

Award recipient of the 2009 Utah Heritage Awards

The Mill is used for a variety of functions by the Tracy Aviary, and will serve as Salt Lake City’s first nature center. The Aviary will also provide ongoing educational activities and programs, winter bird show programs and public lectures.

The remodel includes a catering kitchen to allow for rental of the facility for special events such as birthday parties, weddings, company parties, and reunions to name a few. The variety of interior spaces along with the ability to expand out onto the grounds during pleasant weather combine to offer a unique and inviting setting.

The Mill was renovated to provide the Aviary with a unique and beautiful space that would be an asset to the modern community. The design called for a careful balance between preservation of the Mill's historic character and modernization of the building's performance in terms of durability and efficiency.  The existing structure has been exposed and new materials were selected to accent the rustic qualities of pioneer craftsmanship.  Insulation was added and new non-toxic finishes were selected to increase visitors' comfort and reduce maintenance costs.  Electrical and mechanical infrastructure was modernized throughout.
